Fortress Recycling is celebrating 40 years in business, marking four decades of growth, innovation and commitment to customers across the Midlands.

The company’s roots stretch back to 1981 when founder Andy Pass, started a business that specialised in waste management services for major outdoor events, such as the Royal Show, the Town & Country Festival and Burghley Horse Trials . From modest beginnings with a small fleet and a handful of customers in Leamington Spa, Fortress has grown to become one of the region’s leading independent recycling and waste businesses. Over four decades, the company has been at the forefront of sustainability developments, whilst building a reputation for reliable service and long-term customer relationships.

Throughout its history, Fortress has always been prepared to innovate and invest for the future. In 1997, Fortress purchased its first Front End Loader (FEL) vehicle , becoming one of the first in the UK to use the American-developed technology. This allowed the business to service larger industrial and commercial sites more effectively, supporting continued expansion.

In 2005, the company introduced separate paper and cardboard collections . In 2008, Fortress became the first waste management company in the UK to introduce weighing technology across its fleet , which enabled customers to pay by the average weight of their containers for the first time. This was followed in 2011 by another milestone, when we became the first in the sector to achieve carbon neutral status. Our dedicated mixed recycling and food and glass recycling services soon followed as the company became zero-waste-to-landfill.

Andy and Ann Pass retired in 2014 and ownership passed to their three sons Andy, David and Robert.

Fortress invested £5million in state-of-the-art recycling facility at its Warwick site in 2017, which transformed the company into a fully integrated recycling business with advanced processing capability. Today, Fortress has grown into one of the region’s most respected independent waste management and recycling businesses, supporting thousands commercial customers while continuing to play an active role in the communities it serves.

From its earliest days, Fortress has remained deeply connected to the communities it serves . The company supports local sports clubs including Kenilworth Rugby Club, Sutton Town Juniors and Whittington Cricket Club, and provides free waste and recycling services for a number of charity and community events across the Midlands, including Kenilworth Fireworks & Gala, the Two Castles 10K Run, Whittington Countryside Fair, Old Leamingtonians Rugby for Heroes, and the Bushwacked Bike Festival, which raises funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Today, Fortress continues to invest in more sustainable operations, with the installation of a new 290 kW solar power array in March 2026 , helping to reduce energy costs and improve the environmental performance of our recycling plant.

We’re excited to announce that our new solar PV arrays across both warehouse roofs at Warwick are now fully installed and operational!

With an installed capacity of approximately 290 kWp, this marks a major milestone in our journey towards cleaner, more sustainable energy use.

The system is capable of generating over 250 MWh of clean electricity each year — enough to power around 80–85 average UK homes annually.

This highlights the scale of the installation and the meaningful contribution it will make to powering the site with renewable energy.

Simpler Recycling Reforms

The government's new Simpler Recycling legislation introduces the requirement to separate food waste from general waste bins, for all businesses and non-household premises with more than 10 full-time employees.

These changes come into effect from 31st March 2025.

There are some questions we get asked relating to collections that are frequently asked. Here are some of the more common ones:

Why are my Dry Mixed Recycling and Residual Containers being loaded into the same Vehicle?

Our state-of-the-art recycling plant is able to separate the comingled material we collect, however source separating the material means your business can be fairly charged for the material you are producing.

Why am I being charged separately if it’s all going to the same processing facility?

Your Dry Mixed Recycling or Comingled bin contains recoverable commodities whereas your Residual Waste bin contains material that cannot be recycled. This is why we weigh your container each time it is emptied so we can charge according to your waste type. The disposal cost is determined by the type of material we are collecting.

Why can’t I put Food Waste in my Residual container?

Fortress has a dedicated collection service for customers producing food. Food waste is a real problem for recycling plants. It contaminates recycling streams, such as paper and cardboard, turning it from material with a value into waste that cannot be recycled with a high disposal cost.

Why can’t I put Glass in my Dry Mixed Recycling Container? Fortress has a dedicated collection service for customers producing glass, this enables us to achieve the maximum amount of glass recycling at the lowest cost to you.

Why has my bin not been emptied?

We will not empty your container if it is contaminated with the wrong waste. You will receive an email informing you of the contamination requesting that you inform us when the contamination has been removed so we can reschedule your collection. Other reasons we may be unable to complete your collection are if your container is overloaded or there may have been access issues. In all instances we will be in touch to let you know and arrange for the collection to be made as soon as the issue has been rectified.
