WASTE-TO-ENERGY LANDFILL SITES

Fortress are investing heavily in diverting as much waste as possible from landfill. This figure will continue to improve as recycling rates increase and a separate food waste collection is launched. Fortress currently disposes of residual waste at a waste-to-energy landfill plant.

Gases produced by this site are harnessed, and via four gas to electric generation sites generate electricity that is supplied direct to the National Grid.

The site is a completely sealed site constantly inspected by the Environment Agency and operated by one of the largest landfill operators in the UK. Fortress not only chose this site because of its waste to energy facilities, but also because of its high level of awareness for environmental impacts and solutions.

Landfilling waste, particularly biodegradable waste such as card, paper, wood, garden and food waste produces methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change. Increasing amounts of this waste is reused, recovered or recycled, in response to EU Directives and Government Regulations. There are a variety of targets designed to divert waste from landfill and a tax levied on all waste that is landfilled.
